George Michelis, born in 1950 in Scopelos, holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Economics, Northeastern University, Boston, MA, U.S.A., where he taught economics for four years.

In 1984 following his return to Greece, he held several managerial positions in the Commercial Bank of Greece and in 1989 he became the General Manager of the Bank.

In 1990, he left Commercial Bank of Greece and became a founding member and Executive Vice-Chairman of Egnatia Bank where he headed the Information System and Operations Division.

In April 1996, he was appointed, again, as the General Manager of the Commercial Bank of Greece and Chairman of Commercial Investments S.A., Hermes Mutual Funds S.A., subsidiaries of the Commercial Bank, as well as Chairman of the Bank's subsidiary in Germany. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Hellenic Banks Association and of the Board of Directors of DIAS (Interbanking Systems).

From November 1999, he was elected as a Director of the Executive Committee of the European Union Regional Board of VISA INTERNATIONAL.

From July 2000, he is also Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of Commercial Bank of Greece.
