H.E. Alexander Philon AMBASSADOR OF GREECE TO THE UNITED STATES Ambassador Alexander Philon was appointed Ambassador of Greece to the United States in July 1998. Ambassador Philon's career in his country's foreign service spans more than 30 years. He first began serving Greece in 1965 as an Attache at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. By 1966 he was appointed as Third Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Greece to the United Nations. After distinguishing himself and receiving several promotions from 1966 onward, he was assigned to the Greek Embassy in London and then to the Consulate of Greece in Istambul as Consul General in 1980. He was then called upon to serve as Minister-Counselor at the Greek Embassy in Washington D.C. in 1984. In 1989 he was appointed Ambassador of Greece to New Delhi, and in 1993, Ambassador of Greece to Ankara. Just prior to his appointment as Ambassador to the U.S., Mr. Philon served as Director General for Political Affairs and then Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Bulgaria, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Romania, and Spain have all decorated Ambassador Philon. His distinctions have also included being awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Phoenix of Greece. He received a degree in 1961 in International Relations from the Institute of Political Studies in Paris and then a degree in Law from the University of Paris in 1964.
