Educated at Yale University (B.A. in Economics) and M.I.T. (M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Financial Economics), he has held professorships for many years at U.S. Universities (Baruch College, CUNY and Sloan School of Management, M.I.T.) and at the University of Athens. He has published many scholarly articles and books on banking, finance, industrial economics, and economic history.

He has been a member of the Monetary Committee of the European Community and of the Board of Directors of the European Investment Bank and the commercial Bank of Greece. He has served several times as a member of the Greek Council of Economic Advisers. He has also served as Economic Counselor of the Hellenic Banks Association and as Chairman of the Greek Center of Planning and Economic Research.
